Bad Bunny is kicking off the new year in style. The Puerto Rican superstar is both Apple and Spotify’s most streamed artist internationally and Billboard’s Top Artist of the Year. He shared the record for the most weeks at No. 1 in the last ten years with Drake and the Encanto soundtrack with his album Un Verano Sin Ti’s 13 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200.
Early life and background
Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio also known as Bad Bunny was born March 19, 1994 of Almirante Sur barrio of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Bad Bunny is the son of Tito Martínez, who was a truck driver, and his mother, Lysaurie Ocasio, is a retired schoolteacher.
As a child, he attended church weekly with his devoutly Catholic mother and sang in the church choir until age 13. After leaving the choir, he developed an interest in the artists he heard on the radio, particularly Daddy Yankee and Héctor Lavoe. His stage name came from a time in which he was forced to wear a bunny costume and was angry about it.
Inspiration and music
His mother often listened to salsa, merengue, and ballads which Bad Bunny fell in love with the salsa, merengue, and ballad style infused music.
He rose to prominence in 2016 with his song “Diles”, which led to a deal with Hear This Music. He continued gaining traction with songs such as “Soy Peor” and collaborations with Farruko, Karol G, Ozuna, J Balvin, and more during the next few years.
His breakthrough came in 2018 with his feature on Cardi B‘s hit song “I Like It” alongside J Balvin, and his song “Mia” featuring Drake.

In 2020, he became the first non-English language act to be Spotify‘s most streamed artist of the year and achieved the same record again in 2021. He then had the biggest streaming year for any artist on Spotify in 2022.
Safaera is five minutes of non-stop, sweat-dripping perreo, energized by Bad Bunny’s husky flow and the infectious chant of “hoy se bebe, hoy se gasta.” The mega-banger opened an exciting chapter for Benito and shows just how he continues to evolve into a consistent record-breaking artist.
Yo Perreo Sola brings to mind the erotic but communal African dances that influenced Caribbean traditions, recalling a world before such gestures were co-opted by Europeans and refocused on heterosexual partnering.
